South African variant
The South African variant of Covid has now been found in eight areas of England. 105 cases have been identified. Of them, 11 cases cannot be directly linked to people who had travelled to South Africa. The strain was first identified in December and appears to spread more rapidly than the original virus. It carries mutations that allow it to bind more easily to human cells and hence infecting them.
It is not clear if the South Africa strain is more deadly, however, the discovery of the new
variant in the community not linked to travellers has prompted the launch of “surge testing” yesterday in the London boroughs of Merton, Haringey and Ealing, as well as Hertfordshire, Surrey, Kent, Walsall, Sefton. The government has now sent mobile testing units and home testing kits to these areas for door to door testing.
UK Variant
The UK variant is spreading rapidly in the UK. It has become the dominant strain in cases of COVID-19 in southern England, and has caused a significant increase in hospitalisation rates around London, the South East and eastern England.
The UK variant has been found to be up to 70% more transmissible than the previously
dominant strain in the UK but it is not necessarily more deadly. It was first seen in the UK in September, and by the week of December 9 in London, 62% of COVID-19 cases were due to the new variant. It has now been found in Europe and is spreading globally.
What does this mean for you?
Travel is now restricted from several southern African countries and the current lockdown also states that you must not travel abroad. If you have to travel, check for rules and restrictions on the government website. Government’s advice is:
If you live in the targeted areas, take a test even if you do not have symptoms.
For people who do not live in these areas, take a test immediately if you have
symptoms.
Both vaccine manufactures confirmed that their vaccines will protect against the UK variant and should protect against the South African variant but more test is needed. Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated however, that it may be possible to adapt the vaccines to deal with new variants if necessary. Because of this, please continue to follow strict hygiene practises to keep you and your families safe.
Hertfordshire, Surrey, Kent, Walsall
